How to Improve Your Hockey Skills

When looking for hockey skill improvement, it may seem challenging to understand if all the practice that you are putting forth is actually making you better, or if the improvement is largely mental.  Since it is so important to improve, you should look for ways to actually measure whether or not you are getting better at hockey.

Accuracy Hockey Skill Improvement

One of the most important skills to learn in hockey is accuracy.  Whether it is with shooting the hockey puck at a goal, or passing to a teammate, knowing how to move the puck accurately will make you a much better overall player.

Becoming a more accurate passer or shooter will come with a lot of practice and following the proper techniques.  To ensure that you are getting better, you should set up a goal or target and create some form of target practice game.  Then, you should be able to compare your results over time and be able to see whether your accuracy is actually improving.

Skating

Another very important skill to improve upon is skating.  Those that are good at skating will be much faster and be able to react to game movements much more quickly.  This will allow you to be a much better overall player.  The best way to get better at skating is to play as often as possible and to record yourself playing.  Then you will be able to visibly see whether you have proper skating technique.  To ensure that you are getting better, be sure to set up some cone or obstacle drill, and then compare your completion times from one practice to the next.

Goaltending Practice

While most hockey practice exercises may be for defenders and forwards, there are plenty of exercises that you could do to become a better goaltender.  One of the largest challenges that goaltenders have is reacting to hockey pucks flying in their directions at high rates of speed.  One of the best ways to improve your reaction time would be to have multiple players take shots at you at the same time.  This way, you will have to react to new pucks coming almost instantaneously and will properly prepare you for any game you have to play in.

Strength Hockey Skill Improvement

To be a good hockey player, you will also need to be strong, flexible, and agile.  One of the best ways to be strong, faster, and more agile would be to lift weights.  Hockey players should focus their weight training on core, back, and leg muscle exercises and should track their progress on a regular basis.  Having strength in these areas will give a player the most overall body control, and will lead to the best overall hockey skill improvement.

In order to gain these skills, you will require a training program. That is where we at hockeyOT come in handy. Our online training program was designed by professional hockey players and coaches.
